What I Do as a Training and People Development Manager

I wrote about this more than 20 years ago (see here). These are my thoughts today.

I help new team members get started the right way:

  • Here’s what we’re about and why it matters

  • What we believe, and how your role fits in

  • What you’ll need, who to ask, and how to get help

  • Meet the people who’ll guide you

  • Set up your space, tools, and schedule

  • What your role looks like and how you can grow

  • What we expect - and what you can expect from us

  • Clear roles. Safe environment. Mutual respect.

  • Use your voice, speak up, ask, and contribute

I help people grow and work better together:

  • Break things down into steps that make sense

  • Make learning stick with real-world practice

  • Set clear standards so we all know what good looks like

  • You learn from me, I learn from you

  • Practice. Adjust. Practice again.

  • We solve problems together and share what we learn

  • Stay aligned with the big picture

  • Pay attention to the details that matter

I use tools that build skills and confidence:

  • Stories that stick

  • Learn by doing, not just listening

  • Feedback that helps, not hurts

  • Mentors who walk alongside you

  • Quick lessons, not just long classes

  • Simple examples and real-life comparisons

  • Listening deeply, not just checking boxes

  • Supporting change instead of forcing it

  • Helping people through resistance until they find their footing
